Dallas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb

September 9, 2017 @ 8:00 am – 12:00 pm
Renaissance Tower
1201 Elm St, Dallas, TX 75270

This event is the annual Dallas 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb which is an incredibly symbolic and intensely physical remembrance of September 11th, 2001 as well as a tribute to fallen public safety officers.  Climbers consist of 500 active-duty, public safety officers who carry the name and picture of their counterparts killed at Ground Zero on 9/11/01.  The climb takes place inside the Renaissance Tower at 1201 Elm Street.  The event begins with a climber group photo at 8:00 a.m. followed by an opening ceremony held on the street in front of the building.  The opening ceremony consists of the same elements of a memorial service for fallen public safety officers and a keynote address by a speaker with a direct connection to September 11th.  At 8:46 (the time Flight 11 crashed into the South tower), the climbers observe a moment of silence and then depart to start the climb.  The rest of the event is choreographed to the timeline of events on 9/11/01.  Live video showing the climbers within the stairwell will be streamed to the parking lot. The event script which is narrated by the Master of Ceremonies recognizes the times that the other planes crashed, the towers fell, etc.  Several activities/informational areas will include a kids’ area, display of present day and antique public safety apparatus, showcase of regional responsible capabilities such as Dallas US&R Task Force 2, Desoto MCI Bus, etc.; recruitment tables for local public safety agencies currently hiring as well as local community colleges, police, fire, and EMS academies.  Setup for the event will begin at 6:00 p.m. on September 8, 2017 on the STAR Parking lot, and event setup will begin at 5:00 a.m. at the Renaissance Tower on event day.  Food, beverages, and merchandise will be sold in the vendor area where public-safety-related businesses can showcase their products.  Two flatbed trailers (one used as a stage during open ceremony only, and one used to hold a piece of steel from the tower during open ceremony only) and a scissor lift (for taking photos) will be used during the event.  The first stage will be 8’x8’x18” and the second will be 4’x8’x18”.   The event will require closing Elm Street between Field and Griffin, and the southbound turn lane of Field to Westbound Elm from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on September 9, 2017.  The total projected attendance is 2,400.
